Around a month ago i started to get random lag spikes and vent would do the same, but i would look to my left and find web pages and IRC all fine on my second PC.

I did a tracert twice as per pic to the HM vent server (i didnt know the IP to the ipx clan server i was just on), note i will do another tracert when the timeout happens again. i shall update it when it happens.

But notice on hop 4 it allways times out??

I wouldn’t mind some input from steve :P

Did the same tracert and got 8 hops instead of 14.

Also, your initial ping to your router/modem is shocking high. Should be like 1ms, not 7ms to 23ms. Unless of course your modem is in another state ;)

Yeah one of my servers is probably sending 10mb/s when i did that, its getting backed up to the homeserver.

Booger just came back on vent, and the same phenomena happened to him, but he forgot to check his web pages to make sure it wasnt a dropout.

This blog posting by EA

http://blogs.battlefield.ea.co…..draft.aspx

Announces maintenance that will hopefully address allot of the issues with the Bad Company 2 servers

randomly dropping players.

We were also just updated that this maintenance window is expected to last 5-6 hours from the posted times with

intermittent uptime in between .

Maybe the issue. Though why would it effect vent? Hypernia will just spew the above crap to me to explain it away, so I’ll contact them over the next few days.

a router not responding to icmp packets ( ping/traceroute etc ) doesnt mean much externalz, the fact the others after respond means your packets are getting past and you can see the response time of the ones after is still low, it just means that router is busy doing other stuff and is deprioritising icmp so it doesnt respond to it.

Looking at all those traceroutes its taking your packets roughly 40 ms to get from you in melbourne to somewhere past our sydney core routers which is about the right average time. They dont really highlight anything wrong. I would suggest you download a program called pingplotter which graphs each hop and the packet loss, thats the real thing you need to look for. Unless of course you have linux at home then just run an mtr :)

Also as wos says you should get about 1ms to your router, anything other than that and your internal network is fubard.

Currently we are experiencing network routing issues which we have been addressing

over the last week or so. Routing changes were again made a day or so ago which were supposed to remedy

this problem, unfortunately we are still seeing large amounts of packet loss on our network.

We are currently working with the network engineers in order to get this problem resolved as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your patience in this matter and will continue to keep you updated as we get them.

I just saw a fault at work where the network guys are trying to fix routing issues for our customers and hypernia so looks like its across the board.

Hey steve,

Going to throw another one at you, you know how in these tracerts i have posted.. iam trying to figure out why my first hop is so high.

Every time its allways like this to http://www.google.com or ninemsn, what iam concerned with is everyone saying my first hop should me like 1ms to my router which my router is 192.168.0.1 and my cable modem ip is 192.168.100.1 and my external ip is 122.107.164.97 but i have no idea what that this 10.60.0.1 is.. i have tried pinging it which i can with a average of 8ms?

My router is a d-link DGL 4500 its one of those gaming ones with QoS.

I have tried multiple times doing a few random websites but there all like google and ninemsn as screenshot attached.. now you guys have me paranoid my router is shit.

looks like 10.60 may be the first link in the optus cable network ( you are still on that yeah ? )

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au…..1588399#r3

shows the same ip, if it is that then what we said doesnt really count, although you should still see your routers hop first :S

Also i get 16ms to iinets first hop in perth, so for you to be getting 43ms to your first hope if it is optus equipment still indicates somethings not right, whether the cable itself is saturated with users or something

maybe your QoS is deprioritising ICMP in your router too btw

Yep it is optus, and i did try it with QoS disabled.

Maybe over the next few days i’ll disconnect the router and see what i get.

edit, after having a quick scan of whirlpool, allot of cable users are showing something similar on there first hop but the ms is still pretty high.

I have a feeling its not pinging my router but the cable network itself..

I have almost given up, my last hope is steve from iinet.

edit. seems to be completely isolated to bc2.. played a game of css 32slot server with no issues.

Should i do a re-install?

Weird.

I don’t think a re-install will help, but I guess that is always an option.

If it doesn’t effect css, it could be a closed port issue? Try ensuring any firewalls are set correctly (try it with the firewall off), and if you have a router, open some of the ports. From memory, there’s three port ranges you can open for bc2… just google them ;)

Also try dmz on your router as well and see if that helps.

Also, bc2 sends more data then css so while it could still be a port issue, it could be an upload issue. There are some other tweaks for improving uploads like mtu and crap… give them a try. Also, bc2 pushes your system more then css, so if you are getting quick fps drops and you’re not realising it, that can cause sudden latency as well (eg going from 100fps to 30fps may not be detected by the human eye but can effect latency). Not sure why but it can. So tweak your graphics a bit to try and get a permenent fps that doesn’t jump regardless of the action. Having everything on max on any multiplayer game is always a bad idea.

Could also be an iinet issue to EA servers (such as data recording). I’m really clutching at straws now :p Check for straws in your psu and blow them out if any.

I think im almost ready to celebrate.
