Don’t think they’d have the grunt to do the encoding/streaming. Or to install the Blackmagic card :(
Price isn’t the world’s biggest issue. Getting something with the redundancy of a server but the adaptability of a workstation is what they need.
Would a desktop server (eg not in a rack) do something like that?

Sonik,
I acquired a ATI 4350 Graphics PCI-e x1 from overclockers which I presume should do the job? Not powerful but 1BILLIONx better than the onboard.
I’m thinking I will get a server now as that should remove that major issue.

Anyway, I’ve acquired a server and awaiting its arrival.
Okay. With the switch, I’ll have the modem, desktop, server and drac card connected. Is there any benefit to having both server ethernet ports connected to the switch? I am thinking of running some KVMs on the server so not sure if spreading the bandwidth love is necessary.

Linux as the core with KVMs.
Windows Server/7 virtually. Maybe even a linux virtual for testing.
To be honest, I’m interested in the KVMs as it looks like fun. It also means if they crash a Windows, the server is unaffected – and if I like, I can have a few clones of Windows when things get interesting.

1. The server has 2 Qlogic (QLE2460) 4Gbps PCI-E FC HBA. What the heck are they for? Some form of high bandwidth data links?
2. 8 15k SAS drives. 6 are 300GBs so I’ll probably be running them as RAID 10 for the operating system (large data storage is not required, just redundancy). There are also 2x 76GB SAS which I intend to replace with two 2TB SATAs running in RAID 1 for storage of non vital and temp files. I’m gathering the PERC card can handle two raid systems, one with SAS in R10 and the other SATA in R1?
3. I want to give direct access to the graphics to the KVM. Can more than one KVM have direct access while running at the same time (hoping they just share the resources)? What about the Black Magic media card? What happens if two virtual systems attempt to use it at the same time? Fun and games? I think fun and games.
5. I’m having some fun with all of this. Who’d have thunk it.

FYI, i run the free version of Vmware Esxi on my server, its running a standalone proxy with a linux flavour, ubuntu media server 14.04 and Windows Server 2008 (DNS and Active Directory)
This setup has been rock solid for me, you can run passthough with allot of PCI cards etc, although some have issues.
So in the end all i know about is how to setup and troubleshoot esxi systems.

*Awaits our prophet steban, to send you on your just path of wisdom all hail steban our lord and savior.

you want to run an eth cable to 2 switches so you have redundancy if your switch dies :P 1 switch is a single point of failure :)
once thats done you just setup the two as bonded.

If you only have one switch and its a capable cisco then you can look at setting up port channel groups so it uses both eth cards at same time in a bonded fashion.

hba is fibre channel for super sexy fast :)

run esxi if you can but being a work environment you probably dont want to run bens copy and not sure what the pricing is

I am confused, so you know nothing about esxi, vmware, Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows Server 2008 ??

Are you aware of what operating system you typed that post out on?

Also steban i emailed you about a openvpn question, but looks like your still not at work. :(

I suspect the crappy modem they’re using for internet is a single point of failure. Being bigpond, it’s already failure.
It’s one of those nasty modems with one ethernet port but still a built in router. I’ve tried asking why they don’t have a proper connection provided by the centre but they can’t give me a straight answer.
So it’s single connection would only support one switch anyway?

Going to mention this too them anyway as this whole redundancy thing seems laughable with their current connection.
