Wordpress Permlinks are now fixed.
I’m think of keeping my work/personal/family websites off this new host, so mooshou boys with some knowledge can work on the site (either add their own sites, modify this one, add vps features etc). Total control. It also means someone else can pay for the site in the far future :p
Please contact me for server details. Please don’t give out your details as you do now and then get someone who has a hissy fit and wipe the site (eg aK days).

I have running:
Ubuntu Server 14.04 (GUI is installed and can be run by command). Terminal is default method of control.
Teamviewer is installed under GUI for better remote control.
Webmin for host management.
PHPmyadmin is also going.
Also the first stages of a World of Warcraft server :p

Okay. Here’s a new/different challenge for you Sonik. Bear with me. ROAR.
We’ve already spoken to server ‘experts’ but my instincts are telling me I need something different or modified.

One of my clients broadcasts tv. Simple enough. They use a real basic Acer desktop (running Windows 7) stored at the transmission studio which they’re finally coming to realise has no redundancy and is proving inadequate (grinds to a halt during transmission; meaning if they teamviewer in during transmission, it effects the broadcast). It’s got one of the earlier i7s with 4GB RAM. MONSTER! The desktop is located in a server room (literally just a desktop sitting on its side at the bottom of a rack… looks a little embarrassing surrounded by all those supa POWER rack servers) though only uses basic ADSL2 for internet; no direct fibre or anything. Remember, broadcast studio, not data centre :p
Broadcast is done through a BlackMagic Decklink SDI card.

That’s the setup.

Understanding that we are pursuing a system that provides redundancy and power, the chap in charge at the studio has suggest a regular new server and bob’s your uncle. Windows Server 2012. A $5000 fully decked out HP kit.
While we certainly need a raid setup with decent speeds (looking at RAID5/6 … maybe even 10 with SAS drives, dual power supplies), server people seem to have little idea how this will actually work. In the sense that what we really need is a workstation. The Black Magic card recommends a decent graphics card (not high end gaming, a work station card or something like a low end gaming card would do nicely).
I’d also point out the clients are in Wagga and desktop is Sydney which is why they’d also like something that can trust/leave working.

It’s not going to be used for websites, multi client or require any real concurrent connections etc. They’re using a standard desktop at the moment for heaven sakes! The issue is power and redundancy. No current issue in using basic windows and doubt there will be. I like the look of a server as it’ll rack/rail properly but I don’t see the need for a brand new server.

So some of my questions…
1) Can I use Windows 7 on a server (any driver issues)? Would you recommend something else? They rely heavily on Teamviewer which has some restrictions/issues with Windows Server.
2) Can you just pop in a GT640 graphics card in a server (I understand it’ll need a PCI-E 16x sort of thing). Any issues there? Such as drivers, power.
3) What are your thoughts on a second hand server? Do server chaps avoid them or are they worth pursuing. Having a look, second hand servers appear to provide everything we need, and usually already come with a full deck of hard drives (300GBx6 SAS drives would be fine).
4) Sort of a side question… if we have a desktop sitting underneath the desktop, what is the best method to allow them to communicate/work together? eg use one for storage and/or backup so we can easily move data back and forth between them. Just a second ethernet port each with a crossover cable? :D They wouldn’t need to delegate power between them or anything.

Feel free to randomly express random thoughts on the matter.

1) you can use any OS on a server really, but id suggest sticking to the windows servers 2008 r2 or 2012 if your keen, i dont like the new style for windows 2012 though. The steam content servers you all download off are windows with massive raids for example :)

2) no, you need to remember the servers are specially made hardware so a standard graphics card wont fit, some servers have riser cards with slots for bigger cards but still may issues, drivers may not have been crafted for windows server software either and may have conflicts with other hardware.

3) second hand servers are fine, keep an eye on graysonline as they quite often do decent ones and are pickup from mel/syd etc

4) if networking is configured correctly have them both plugged into a switch with ACL’s that allow rdp to each and then you can just present the other desktops hdd as a mount point

Much appreciated. Did check grays actually BUT THEY HAVE NONE. Bastards.
Beginning to realise in my own reading that a graphics card will probably be useless. Some people have gotten around this by using older PCIe v1 cards and hacking to PCIe port itself to allow for its length. VERY pro :p

I also read a review on the Decklink SDI card caused blue screens of death in servers so I’m thinking that a standard version of Windows would be required there. However, the Blackmagic site recommends a decent graphics card (no onboard ones) so… :(
I looked at a workstation to try and fulfill the redundancy needs but also keep the “media” side of it going nicely. Can buy a rack mounted case to go with it. But the price is high and the redundancy is no where near as good.

WHY CAN’T SOMETHING WORK!?

It’s the clients fault really. They’ve got some bizarre setup.
I might persuade them to purchase a cheaper server to test on first before sinking money into a bigger one.

yeah , get a couple of them and place them neatly in the corner of a room somewhere if they wont shell out for a normal server.
