Oi,
Seen this deal for a KVM server. I’m presuming it should run relatively fast for the specs (compared to shared hosting) and do you think it’s worth the deal? IS IT WORTH PURSUING????

Cores: 4
Dedicated RAM: 1024MB
vSwap: 1024MB
Disk: 50GB
Bandwidth: 3TB
IPs: 2 IPv4 / 16 IPv6 (additional IPs available)
Price: $7/month

Believe it’s located on East Coast US.
Doesn’t include anything else so I’ll have to install some random linux (or even Windows).
Their OpenVS are even cheaper (basically double the specs) but if I understand correctly, they’re a bit useless?

If they’re worth it, I’ll move mooshou to a KVM which should provide nice speeds and possibly other useful(less) services.

Looks like a good deal, what are you paying for the current setup now?
I also like the idea of the KVM freedom to deploy anything that’s needed. You can even go a headless style linux server to save space.

Only paying for a standard Hostgator plan (about $10pm). Like all shared hosting, it’s limited in power but offers unlimited for everything else (space, bandwidth, domains, emails etc).
I don’t use alot of space anyway and don’t intend to. Only issue is that I have limited Linux knowledge and while I’m happy to purchase it, I might need others to install all the crapware.

i havent played around with them much to be honest, i think the only difference is kvms have their own kernal wheres as the others are shared so if you need to rebuild crazy stuff to say make a dodgey netflix redirector then kvm is better and you also have your own resources that arent shared.
If its just a webpage then they probably as good as each other, if you want to do more stuff the kvm is probably better.
The cores wont be that useful as memory is usually the bottle neck.

Hmmm. So I could also use it as a DNS thingy for Netflix and save me the $5pm I’m currently paying?
Where does the goodness end?

I’m liking this :)

just set up a vpn on it with pdns recurrsor, purchase a chromecast for your tv at home, connect it via vpn to your host and purchase netflix/hulu for much cheaper than foxtel lol
thats what im looking at doing when i move house as foxtel just aint worth it anymore, although I will prolly skip the vpn part and just buy the unblock-us as its like 5$ american a month

For netflix, I’d highly recommend a Roku over a Chromecast.
I’d also recommend experimenting with XBMC (can run on Android – including TV dongles – Windows, Linux etc).
It has 1Channel which simply streams EVERYTHING. It’s not as nice to use as Netflix on a Roku, but it gives you much more.

I recently tried the xbmc addon Sports Devil. It provides world wide streaming of cable channels as well as each countries free to air. Like having foxtel though often it’s in SD. I use a small itx pc setup for it all using a fly mouse and it’s fantastic.

In regards to a VPN, do I setup the KVM like a dedicated server (eg install Linux… Ubuntu??) and then setup the VPN? I have never done any of this before :)

The server has the automatic options to install the following (each with different versions)…
Ubuntu
CloudLinux
Debian
Arch
CentOS
FreeBSD
Fedora
Slackware
And a few others…

I have offered both Australian dedicated servers, and also my servers in usa for free for us to use, but no one wants to take me up on my offers?

I imagine your servers to be very very sticky.
Regardless, how’d you get your hands on two dedicated servers in aussieland? Are they located with good internet connections. What are their specs? What do you currently use them for?
Same questions for your US servers.

Get Sonik to setup the VPN for Netflix on one of em and provide free VPN for the mooshou boys :)

When a server downloads from itself (1ms ping???), you’d get those speeds.
IT TELLS ME NOTHING!

Sorry for the down time. Turns out my linux skills were fine… but the hoster expects every domain/subdomain to be recorded with them first. Yuck.
I still have to fix the permalinks with wordpress… it appears to have gone a but weird but otherwise… enjoy the new vps.

EDIT: My ISP also caches websites. So it takes around 24h to 48h before I can work with my own changes. I try using proxies but that only helps a little.
