NERD ALERT. This thread is only for nerds.

Any attempt to read this will otherwise lead to brain death. You have been warned.

As I’ve been FORCED to work with alot of macs lately (one of the chaps I work for do alot of Final Cut Pro crap), I decided to go forth in hope and glory to build my own hackintosh. Also building a high end hackintosh to replace their 8 core Mac Pro.

While you can download a hacked version of OSX (usually an older version) that can work on most machines, I wanted one that could load OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion properly (and dual boot into Windows). We’re talking a comp that can work 100% as a mac, and not as some half baked mash attempt. So with help from http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com…..-2012.html, I began my build.

Recent Purchases (around $1000 in total):

CASE: Silverstone FT03 Silver

http://www.pccasegear.com/inde…..s_id=16650

Has a mac look about it (as well as a beer cooler). I love the slot loaded dvd and the insides a real funky. Hot swappable drive was nice.

CPU: Intel i5 3570k

AMD not truly compatible with OSX, and AMD suck at the mo anyway. With the cooler, a basic overclock to 4.6Ghz is easily possible. The i5 benched higher than the 8 core Xeons running full threads :)

CPU Cooler: Antec Kuhler H20 620

The case is for mATX so there’s not alot of room for a high end air cooler, and air coolers infringe on the memory area. I went for a basic liquid cooler, and used the silverstone fan so there are two fans, one pulling, one pushing, across the radiator.

Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4-M

While a gigabyte is always recommended for hackintoshes, I love some of the new asrock features and the machine will be mostly used with Windows, not OSX. It’s also an UEFI bios so it’s still pretty compatible.

http://www.pccasegear.com/inde…..s_id=19866

Graphics Card: Gigabyte 660GTX

I didn’t want one that drew alot of power, but was still good enough for all games. Unfortunately, the 660Ti or 640/650 are much more compatible, and the 660 did draw some issues with OSX in the beginning but was corrected.

http://www.pccasegear.com/inde…..s_id=21453

Storage: Samsung 830 256Gb SSD for Windows, Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD for OSX PLUS normal HDDs for steam and programs.

Hell yeah.

Memory: 16GB (2×8) Gskill 1600Mhz

Wanted full size, 1600Mhz.

http://www.pccasegear.com/inde…..s_id=19766

Power Supply: Silverstone 600Watt Fully Modular

had to be completely modular as the case doesn’t have alot of space for cable management. High wattage wasn’t required but looking to replace with a Thermaltake QFan for quieter operation.

Initial installation with unibeast was problematic. The 660GTX had to be removed and installation carried on fine with the onboard HD4000. Infact, no command line options were required for either installation or for loading. This is virtually unheard of. Big tick for the asrock.

It took quite alot of tinkering and reinstallation’s of OSX to get a feel for what was needed. On first load, onboard network is fine, and proceeded with multibeast setup for kexts (drivers) etc. SMC first, but little else was needed.

WORKING:

Pretty much everything.

NOT WORKING:

Nothing

SEMI WORKING:

USB3. Always a problem with Hackintoshes. However, they do work with alot of gear, at full speed, but some things like USB2 flash drives do not, and some USB3 items will only work at USB2 speeds. USB2 work 100%.

Sleep does work (which again is rare) but can take a minute to wake up :( Might program my own DSDT to fix these minor issues.

i5 benchmark hit 6.60 (no overclock) versus 6.02 on 8 core Xeons CINEBENCH.

The update from 10.8.0 to 10.8.2 was rather smooth. Only issue afterwards was the kext for audio had to be reinstalled. I’ve since installed office and final cut pro, all working fine. Perfect OSX installed and uses Chimera for multiboot.

Probably the most fun I’ve ever had building a comp.

IMAGES OF BUILD.

That’s a windows error message.

I’m an OSX user now. Which means I never get any errors, but when I do, I don’t know what to do.

During the time my mac is down, I’ll spend the day trolling PC forums (on my backup dell laptop) on how shit and unstable their machines are.

haha… plug and play didn’t work again? No problem for us mac users. There’s no drives for that equipment to work on OSX anyway! No chance of conflicting hardware here.

I’ll laugh on how you must spend $200+ on your operating system whereas I only spend $30 on my $4billion machine.

I’ll act smug with my retina display which is capable of showing programs that no one has ever heard of or needs with perfect clarity.

Office 2013? Pfffff. We’ve got… that office software for macs… can’t remember its name… but we’ve got it!

Do you have a super drive? Sure, you’ve got a similar device that burns dvds and cds like our SUPER DRIVE. But ours is called a SUPER DRIVE.

And you let just ANY ram connect to your motherboard? mac makes sure only one or two sorts of ram work with our equipment. We don’t just want any sort of ram clogging up such things. When you pay $100+ per gig, you know its gotta be good.

Still stuck with USB3 with your WINDOZZZE/??? We’ve got Thunderbolt! Two ports is all you need because not only is it like 3 times the speed of USB3, but there’s like only one device compatible with it.

And who can argue with the ability of macs with video and photo editing? Despite the fact that the latest Final Cut Pro X has been the biggest flop since Steve Jobs died, and that the majority of Final Cut users moved the Adobe products, we’re still the best because the quality of our people who remain dedicated and loyal to the brand for some many years. Are the massive influx of new users pouring out from Art College is guaranteed to keep such a user base full of similar minded and educated people coming back for more.

I’d have kept this post shorter but I can’t play games on a mac so I’ve got nothing better to do.

That’s not a network error. :p

That’s a simple OSX request that you are loading something not from apple store but rather third party.

I just learnt bluetooth keyboards don’t work in the bios. That is poo.
