I’m in the process of acquiring a VPS (basically a server) for my own personal use. While VPS aren’t perfect for running a game server, it might be suitable to run a clan server for whatever game and possibly VENT. Though I think we have a pretty stable VENT server through Sonik?

Is there any particular game we want to try out? Not sure how BC2 would run.

Any other ideas what we could do with it. I plan to use it to test some of my more heavy programmers that I design, so there’s no obligation to use it.

Basically. It’s called an ‘Unmanaged’ VPS (makes it hard to maintain). Access is through Shell so I have to learn all the linux commands and crap. Ive setup a Vent; though the people who own vent have gone to shit. Limited to an 8 slot server unless you’re a fully fledged business, and the cracks don’t work too well.

It has a fantastic connection to it though, and anything you download from it will max out your connection. If I can figure out the final steps in getting Apache running to my liking, I might even move the mooshou site to it. Not alot of webspace at this time, but if I can figure it out… I might eventually get a dedicated server which would definitely allow me to run a few BC2 servers, and perhaps some others.

$10.

haha

Nah, the dedicated will cost heaps, but an unmanaged VPS was only $10. jumba.com.au

Seriously, unless you already know Linux, or are willing to experience the pain and frustration of throwing yourself in head first… stay away from ‘Unmanged’.

np’s bogs. I’d only set up that vent it give it a try. Not sure at this stage how reliable this VPS will be.

Still not 100% sure what to do with this VPS, and if you have any ideas Sonik, I’d even be happy to give you shell access. So you can smack away at the system to see what it can do.

FOR THE HORDE!!!1!! I mean…. FOR THE CLAN!!!

my l4d2/tf2 guild has a free vent server with our server rent – 40 slot hosted by hypernia which we never use.

let me know if you’re interested, happy to give out vent admin and customise the vent server however you like.

offer is there while we have the dedicated server anyway.

I don’t do fancy stuff :D I just setup systems so they work hehe

There isnt a huge amount of things you can do, games servers prolly wont work, vent and website hosting would do easily, other than that scripts to see whose on vent at a time or which game they are in etc

could use it as a downloadurl space for custom maps/sounds for games like tf2 and css, its something that I’m missing at the moment, downloading from a url will work like up to 50 times faster than downloading from the actual game server, and its all invisible to the client.

I’ll keep the VPS for the mo as an area for downloads, and a backup vent could be useful.

I’ll PM the shell details to you Sonik, and feel free to do anything to the server. I ran a vent on it, installed an automatic startup script incase the server reboots, but it doesn’t seem to work for some reason. The server has reboot and the vent didn’t restart with it :(

has a quick look, parallels is quite the indepth hosting package it seems.

Um venti – did u do it via the http interface or ssh?

If you run it as a daemon in cli do it as a -d or something so it drops it to daemon mode,, u can then add taht command to cron ( or inittab depending on what version it is )

Cool. You’re pretty good at this. I can program in PERL, you’d think linux would come naturally… but I get brain freeze. Could be the icecream though.

You should come work for us :P our whole billing system and customer platform is done in perl and hardly anyone knows it these days hehe

u prolly just need to install it a few times on vms then you will get used to linux, i’d suggest starting with ubuntu though as its most user friendly and well rounded.

I used suse for a while, not a bad little operating system, unlike windows, it comes with every single driver that you would ever need, no matter how obscure – even found my finger print reader – back when they where new.

I had some css dedicated servers setup on it for lanning.
