When we reviewed Relic’s excellent Dawn of War III we noted that on the multiplayer front it felt like the game needed a few more modes to balance out the single MOBA-like one on offer. And now, with next week’s Annihilation update it looks like the game will be getting a classic RTS-style multiplayer mode called just that — Annihilation.
One that will come in two flavours, with Annihilation Classic being the one where you don’t start with any defenses or structures — classic RTS.
Annihilation is great for those looking for a classic multiplayer feel, but is also a perfect playground for squaring off against the AI. The game isn’t over until one team has lost all of their core structures, giving you lots of chances to rebuild for the comeback. Annihilation with Defenses will give you a head start in base protection. Faction-specific turrets will defend your base from predetermined locations, buying you time to build up your army. In Annihilation Classic, you don’t start with turrets but you can still build them if you’ve taken one of the new doctrines.
In addition to new skins and defensive doctrines, the Annihilation update for Dawn of War III will introduce a new map to take advantage of the new mode, plus update and retrofit all existing maps to cater for the more classic style of play. The update is expected to roll out on June 20.
